The Royal Institute of British Architects and hotel company Bespoke are launching a competition to find concepts that make hotels more inclusive for disabled people.

The competition features a £20,000 top prize, which the organisers say is the largest cash prize in the UK for a design concept.

As well as the top prize, there are further £10,000 in cash awards in the competition.

The competition organisers say the awards “seek to challenge the perception of hotel facilities set aside for disabled people, which can often be viewed as joyless, poorly designed and over-medicalised”.

They say the awards are inspired by the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games, “which drew worldwide attention to the capacities of those with disabilities and – in the Olympic venues themselves – to the importance of good design”.

The competition is split into three strands – architecture, product design and service design.

Awards will be given for concepts that “address guests’ experience from the front door to any room or service within a hotel; and includes the process that has to be undertaken before a visitor arrives or during check out.”

Judges include Paralympian Tanni Grey-Thompson and architect Alan Stanton.

The competition is open internationally to everyone. The deadline for entries is 1 September and winners will be announced on 1 December.
